Summer Security Tips

Traditionally, the summer months mean an increase in burglary rates, but there are simple steps you can take to protect your home and your belongings from theft and prying eyes.

This week we share some summer security tips to help improve the security of your home in summer.

General Tips

  • Make sure you have adequate locks on all external doors and easy to reach windows – these will be the windows on the ground floor, above flat roofs, above conservatories or near drainpipes.
  • Never leave keys where they can be reached through an open window or letterbox – better still, never leave them in sight
  • If possible, keep valuables out of sight from passersby – it may be difficult to hide TV’s and stereos but laptops, mobile phones and tablets make enticing treats!
  • Always secure your garage and garden equipment when unattended, even for a short period like a much earned coffee break – remember, thieves are opportunists and it only takes a few seconds.
  • Ideally, large, high value items such as bikes and lawn mowers should be fixed to something – fit anchor posts to the floor or walls to provide a fixed point for locking your belongings to.
  • If you have kids, check the areas where they have left to make sure windows have been secured – it’s tempting for kids to leave bikes and toys outside the front door or in the front garden but it’s best to lock them away in the garage when not in use.
  • Always secure car windows and roofs while they are unattended – never leave anything on show like money or a ‘sat nav’.
  • Always lock and secure the front of the house when you are spending time in the back garden, such as for a BBQ.

Holiday Away?

  • Try and refrain from broadcasting your holiday dates on your Social Media profiles.
  • If you will be away for longer periods of time, use timer switches on radios, TV’s and lights to give the impression you are home.
  • Arrange for a friend or neighbour to check the house when you’re away – make sure they collect any post and move it away from sight and open and close the curtains.
  • If you don’t have someone to check on your house, speak to the Post Office and have your mail held whilst you are away – post can be held for up to 2 months and then delivered at a later, more convenient date.
  • Consider a safe – this could be a wise investment to store valuables, whether you’re away or not.

Whatever you choose to do this summer, look at your home and belongings through the eyes of a thief – it only takes a few seconds and most burglars are opportunists, don’t make it easy for them!

We hope these simple Summer Security Tips have helped – stay safe this summer.
